SOPA Buzz Killers

At least 2 blogs I follow have recently done the buzz kill thing on the whole SOPA kerfuffle. The screed basically goes a bit like this one:

First they came for the communists,
and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a communist.
Then they came for the trade unionists,
and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a trade unionist.
Then they came for the Jews,
and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a Jew.
Then they came for the Catholics,
and I didn't speak out because I was Protestant.
Then they came for me
and there was no one left to speak out for me.

Just change the words to your favorite constitutional amendment, right, or word it in such a way as to show how everybody else in the whole galaxy sat around and did nothing while all our freedoms were being trampled.  As if that had only just started a year or two ago.  It's a nice self rightous screed.  If you word it right you can come off as humble because you'll include yourself in there.  I have only one thing to say about that:

What if THIS is the movement that starts it all?

And there you go poo pooing it all to hell...

  2. Bunkerville is correct, BUT Congress never shelves anything forever. Sooner or later, it will return - and probably hidden somehow. Like attempting to confiscate guns or cars, taking the 'net away will quite probably trigger a violent response.

  3. Personally, I think Congress will still run scared at any type of mass "action" on the part of the people against something they try. The problem we tend to have is that the stuff that affects the more conservative types requires them to stop doing responsible things like working to feed their families in order to get the message across. Businesses can get the point across with money. Liberals with action from folks who have nothing else worth doing. It's something of a conundrum.

I believe that if you ever riled up conservatives enough to do anything drastic it would be very ugly very quick.

My main point though was that one ought not discount the flash point of where people will begin to resist infringement on their freedom. We've been nickled and dimed to death for a long time. At some point we're out of change.
